SIMPSON VICTORIOUS AT PGA SOUTHERN TRAINEE CHAMPIONSHIP

Titleist #1 in Ball, Driver, Fairways, Hybrids, Irons, Wedges & Putter Counts

May22, 2009 - Titleist Brand Ambassador Alex Simpson from New South Wales is the 2009 CPM PGA Southern Trainee Champion. Simpson had a final round of 70 that saw him win by three shots from fellow Titleist Brand Ambassador and current PGA Futures Champion Damon Welsford. Victorian Leigh Deagan was a further shot back in third.

Simpson shot rounds of 68, 68, 66 and 70 to finish 16 under par for the tournament. Simpson started the round with a birdie but gave it back on the very next hole. Simpson had consecutive birdies on the 6th and 7th holes before bogeying the 180 metre par 3 8th hole. Simpson was able to make the turn with a handy lead over Welsford and South Australian Cody Sherratt.

After bogeying the 10th hole Simpson put the tournament beyond doubt with consecutive birdies on the 16th and 17th holes. “I was very happy with my consistent play this week”, said Simpson, “if I can make another winning cheque like this I will be heading to the European or Asian qualifying schools”. Simpson collected a cheque for $8,100 equalling his biggest pay day after winning the 2007 PGA National Futures Championship.

Titleist was the most played golf ball at the PGA Southern Trainee Championships with 96 players (72%), compared to 14 for the nearest competitor.  Titleist was also first in Drivers (71) Fairways (69), Utility irons (24), iron sets (72) wedges (211) and putters (54).
