I have been struggling to hit my woods lately, back up to a 16 handicap. I play with AP1's. I am trying to get ahold of a 2 iron that allows me to get a considerable amount of distance more than my 4 iron that i am currently

Re: 2 Iron

I'm a long iron guy too. I still bag the 2 iron from my old set of DCI's. I tried hybrids but keep reverting to the irons. Check out the used clubs at one of the major retailers. Bet you can find a good one cheap because nobody wants them.
I will tell you that a 2-iron is a personal preference.

I have a 2-iron that I order about 4 months ago and I love it. But I have always had 2-irons and was always able to hit them. It is just one of those things. I got a hybrid before I ordered the 2-iron, but I could not stand it. I hit it a mile high and could not work it very easily. But, I am just a 2-iron person and everyone thinks I am crazy until I hit it and then they change their mind.

Just my 2 cents.

Joey
It is a "different strokes" thing. I just happen to be one of those that prefers a fairway wood over a longer hybrid (i.e., 5 wood vs 18H or 7W vs 21H). I don't carry a 3 wood because I can hit a 5 wood just as far and I have a lofted driver. I also can crush a 27H and 34H AND work them.

I carried a 1 iron and a 2 iron back in the 1980s - used to crush them off the tee but didn't fare well off the deck (could hit a 1 iron close to 260 and generally hit a 2 iron around 220-230). I generally hit a 4 iron off the deck about 200 yd. I used a 3 wood on the long par 5s and could hit it pretty close to 300 yards (best drive was 325 with a laminated 3W in 1973 or so).

I have a friend who can nail a 3 iron off the deck all day. I had him try a hybrid and a 5 wood and he couldn't hit either.

One of my fitters abhors hybrids because he tends to snap hook them. He can nail a long iron.

When I took up the game again in 2006, I had quite a few changes in my golf game. To summarize, my winning combination for the long game has been a 19-21* fairway and 25-27H. My middle game winner has been a 32-34H. The lowest lofted iron I have carried has been a 7 iron. I found out I do better with a choke shot on the fww vice trying to use a 21H and there is no value added with a 24H since it got only about 5 yards more than the 27.

Re: 2 Iron

I will tell you that a 2-iron is a personal preference.

And you know the joke about 1 irons.

Here's the rule of thumb about woods and hybrids and irons (oh my!) with the same loft. ( I have this comparison in print somewhere.) The wood is longer and has a higher trajectory. The iron is the shortest and has the lowest trajectory. The hybrid fits in the middle. The iron is the shortest length club and the easiest to control. The wood is the longest and is the hardest to control. The hybrid gets tricky. How well you can control it and hit depends on its design. Does it look like a fairway wood or some sort of engorged iron. It also depends on your swing. If you swing flat stay with a wood or hybrid that looks like a older wood. If you have a steeper swing then stick with the iron or the engorged hybrid. Matching your swing type to the club will help you control the club, have a more consistent swing and strike the ball better.

A 3 iron is about 21* so a hybrid of that loft should go farther and be easier to control if the length of the fairway wood is bothering you. It should be easier to hit than your 4 iron also.

But if you REALLY want a 2 iron then go look around the used club shops or thrift (used clothes and stuff) shops. Get a good cavity back 2 iron like an Eye 2 or Zing or a cavity back Titleist.

For the price of any new club you can get a few lessons.

But you really don't need to worry about it. You can play comfortably with just your irons from the middle tees until you get your swing fixed.

Re: 2 Iron

I just joined the 910F club this weekend. Got a 19 with Bassara A flex shaft for a good price and minimal cash outlay (traded my Superfast 5W and 4H) and shortened it to 41.5" (my proven length for a 5 wood) and got the best performance with C3 (desired trajectory and distance). Very easy to hit and gets the same distance as my 5-18 did (with almost 2* more loft) and a lower trajectory.

Re: 2 Iron

Mike,

I find it much easier to use a 5 wood vs even a 2 or 3 hybrid. I carry a 4/21 and 6/27 hybrid and I am a 13 handicap.

The reason I asked about your short game is because you are getting golf pro distance out of a 4 iron and playing a little bit over bogey golf.
In all seriousness, try a side-by-side comparison between a 2 iron and a 17 or 19 hybrid. Also find out why you are having trouble with your fairway woods. A majority of us have an easier time with a 5 wood or 17-19 hybrid vs a 2 iron (and that includes those with near scratch handicaps). I find it much easier to hit a 5 wood vs using a 2H and, quite honestly, get more distance out of a 7 wood vs a 2H.

On the other side of the coin, I have a friend who couldn't hit a 5 wood nor a hybrid if you paid him to do it but can hit a 3 iron wirh consistency.

The only fairway wood I carry is an 18* 5 wood and do quite well with it.

Re: 2 Iron

I find it much easier to use a 5 wood vs even a 2 or 3 hybrid. I carry a 4/21 and 6/27 hybrid and I am a 13 handicap.
