I was wondering about the new AVX. Still trying to figure out where this ball fits into the whole scheme of things. So started thinking about the relativity of other Titleist acronym-named products to see if there was a hint about the positioning of AVX.

AP Irons=Advanced Performance CB Irons=Cavity Back MP Irons=Muscle Back

    Pro V1 (and x) =Pro Version #1 (or #1, with an "x factor")?

    AVX=Amateur Version? Something else?

I'm only guessing about the balls. I think the irons are all correct. Where else would I go to get the answer, but a TeamTitleist board? Somebody here must know. A little help? Anybody?

Great question, I'm definitely coming back to this forum to read the answers as I've always been interested on why Titleist names their product.

Hey Doug - In regards to Pro V1, our Vice President of Golf Ball R&D said the following in an article from PGATOUR.com about the initial seeding of Pro V1 in 2000:

"We had a Professional ball. We had a Tour ball. Then there was the Prestige ball. Needless to say, we had a lot of different balls on the market," Morgan said. "We really didn't know what to call it and came up with all kinds of crazy names, and as we got closer to bringing the ball out, we knew we needed a name for the USGA's Conforming Ball list.

"Back then the USGA list came out every six months, so you had to commit to a name for at least that long. There was a lot of discussion in-house and we still couldn't come up a name, so we defaulted to a lab name, which I made up -- although I thought it would only be a temporary measure. The 'Pro' comes from Professional, the 'V' is for veneer, which was the layer of Urethane, and '1' because it was the first.

"We gave it to the pros and told them it was just a lab name and that we were going to change it, but they said they liked it, so we kept it for that year. We discussed changing it again, but by that point players loved Pro V1."

Abby, thank you for that explanation. I was guessing what is was and here was what went through my mind

    "A" Alternate
    "V" to the ProV1
    "X" or the ProV1x

but thank you for adding a bit more color to this one.

I am curious to hear what type of feedback you have received from the select testing markets?

I was able to get my hands on a couple sleeves. Unfortunately my 1st go at them was not the best. Snipped the 1st one dead left & into the pond, hit the next ball to a granite yard marker in the fairway and scuffed that one next, then found a way to lose the 3rd ball somewhere else on the course. Needless to say, not my best showing...All me, NOT THE BALL. Fortunately, I had a secret Santa give me one more sleeve. Hoping I get to play with these a bit longer, but need the ground to thaw before I break out my last sleeve.

I remember reading that article about the ProV1 and finding out that the V stands for veneer.
I'd be interested in see what AVX stands for

    Thanks Abby. And the AVX?
  12. Abby thank you for sharing that cool story!! It's really nice when those things work out well like that. My only hope is that the AVX is another ball beside the Prov1 and X, as those 2 balls I just couldn't imagine you making any better, so I hope they never get replaced!

So, we could reasonably expect a ProV2 at some point...

    Sounds weird, doesn't it?
