Titleist Tips: Low Point Control for Finesse Wedge Mastery

1 min
Added on March 13, 2025

In his extensive research on short game technique, Titleist staff member James Sieckmann has learned that for finesse wedge shots around the green, you want to deliver the club at about a 6-degree down angle, striking the turf and reaching the low point of the swing's arc about 1-3 inches in front of the golf ball. This set of conditions describes optimal low-point control and it's a critical skill that all great wedge players use to make consistent contact with the golf ball and produce predictable, reliable results.

This might sound very technical and hard to achieve, but as James shows in this video, two simple drills can put you on the right path to mastering low-point control. Use James' Shadow Drill to make sure your head stays relatively steady throughout your swing and use his Stork Drill to make sure your chest keeps moving through the shot with your arms, hands and clubhead. Together, the skills that these drill reinforce will improve your ball contact as well as the way your wedges interact with the turf. Chunks and skulled shots will become a thing of the past and you'll hit many more shots within tap-in range.
