Keys to Success: The 2016 OHL Classic at Mayakoba

This week marks the tenth year of PGA TOUR golf in Mexico as the TOUR returns to Playa del Carmen for the OHL Classic at Mayakoba.

The action will again take place on the par-71, 7,039-yard layout at El Camaleon Golf Club at Mayakoba Resort, challenging players as they wind their way over holes bordered by jungle, mangrove swamp and beautiful tropical beaches.

Driving the ball accurately is always a key to success at El Camaleon and one player who proved this axiom was Titleist golf ball loyalist Chris Kirk (Pro V1x). Kirk grabbed the first-round lead after firing a stellar 8-under-par 63 on Thursday, thanks in large part to his play off the tee.

"I definitely drove the ball well today," said Kirk. "Just trying to stick to my sort of go to shot and hit draws out there for the most part. It's definitely intimidating off the tee a little bit, but thankfully I hit a lot of good ones today."

Another player who benefited from a solid day of driving was Titleist Brand Ambassador Webb Simpson (Pro V1 golf ball, new 917D3 driver). The 2012 U.S. Open champion is playing in his first OHL Classic and he got off to a fast start with an opening 6-under-par 65, two shots off Kirk's lead.

"You've got to hit it straight," Simpson said, echoing Kirk's thoughts. "I was pleased with keeping it in play. Never really hit many bad shots and made some putts. It’s a good start for me."

Conditions look to be ideal for scoring throughout the weekend, but with trouble in view on nearly every hole, no lead is safe on El Camaleon. We could be in store for some low scores and an exciting finish on Sunday.

This week at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba 87 players will be trusting a Pro V1 or Pro V1x golf ball for their success. That's more than five times the nearest competitor with 15 and more than all competitors combined.

Titleist is also the top choice in the hybrid (21) and irons (32) categories. Vokey Design Wedges also topped the approach, sand and lob wedge (150) category.

Good luck to all of #TeamTitleist in Mexico!
