Throwing Darts: Justin Thomas

“Those are sick. You just put it on the ground and you feel like you’re going to hit a pure shot with it,” Titleist Brand Ambassador Justin Thomas said.

Thomas has been on a tear since putting the new Titleist 620 MB irons (5-9) in his bag to start the 2019-2020 season —  adding to the T100 4 iron he put in play last summer.

After securing a win at the CJ Cup @ Nine Bridges in October and compiling a 3-1-1 record for the victorious United States President’s Cup team in December, Thomas arrived at Kapalua last week for the Sentry Tournament of Champions riding a wave of momentum. The run of good play continued, with Thomas capturing his 12th career PGA TOUR title (and his third in seven starts) to become only the fourth player in history with as many wins by the age of 27. No player under 30 has more wins.

One key to JT's success at Kapalua was his iron play. For the week, Thomas statistically topped the field in Birdies (24); was 2nd in Strokes Gained: Approach to Green; and 3rd in Greens in Regulation (77.8). From 125-150 yards out, his average proximity to the hole was 15’7” compared to a field average of 31’7”.

In order to better understand Thomas’ new setup and how it’s aided his recent success, we spoke with Titleist Tour Rep JJ VanWezenbeeck to get the inside scoop:

4 IRON

“At our commercial shoot at Scioto, JT saw the T100 for the first time,” VanWezenbeeck said. “The top of his iron set has been an area where he’s been looking for a little more launch but having a club that is still pleasing in shape and offset. The T100 solved all of these in one shot. He asked to take this club from the shoot and wanted to play it that week. It is part of the reason the launch was moved up because it was such a performance difference in terms of launch, ball speed, and forgiveness compared to his 718 CB.”

5-9 IRONS

JT moved into the new 620 MB irons (5-9) at the Safeway Open in September, replacing the 718 MBs that he played for the previous two years. “We always want our players to feel 100% confident before making a change in to any product. Justin loves the clean looks the 620 MBs provide as well as the new offsets,” VanWezenBeeck said.
