Your Spin Advantage: New Pro V1 and Pro V1x

Low spin is a big advantage in the long game, which the new Pro V1 and Pro V1x each achieve through their integration of a lower compression core surrounded by a thin, high flex modulus casing layer. But as Fordie Pitts, Tour Consultant for Golf Ball Performance told us, distance is only one facet of the game.

New Pro V1 and Pro V1x deliver more spin on the scoring shots for enhanced greenside control

“We could design a product that would just go far when struck with a driver, but that’s not the complete game of golf. That wouldn’t help any player shoot lower scores. We’ve got to look at all aspects of it. Distance is just one aspect, and spin and control are every bit as important.

I would say in the past two years, more so than any other time in the last fifteen years that I've been working with players on tour, that players are asking for more spin. Greens are getting so firm and demanding that there's a much a greater premium put on control. To hold the greens – and to leave the ball in the proper shelves and quadrants on those greens – you really need spin to get up and down, to score and ultimately, to compete.”

Titleist's multi-layer technology was a key factor in allowing R&D to keep spin down on shots where you need distance while amplifying spin on shorter shots, where precision and control is the priority. To achieve greater greenside spin, Titleist R&D targeted the cover and developed the softest cast thermoset urethane material ever used on a Pro V1 or Pro V1x.

"On shots with more lofted clubs like wedges, the cover plays a much larger role than the core and casing layer," said Brian Comeau, Director of Materials Research. "By using a softer urethane formulation, the cover flexes on these shots and gives more at impact. More of the cover interacts with the grooves of the club, creating more friction. The more friction you have, the more spin you can generate.”

How can more greenside spin help your game? Derek Ladd, Senior Project Manager Research & Intellectual Property, explained that more greenside spin can be even more beneficial to amateurs than tour players:

The softer urethane cover on both the new Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls delivers more spin for even greater greenside control

"Tour players know how to clip the ball precisely with their wedges and spin it more, spin it less – but most amateur golfers don't generate a lot of spin in and around the greens. With more spin, you can be more aggressive with your irons and wedges. You're going to be able to throw the ball a little bit closer to the pin because you know it's going to grab and stop quickly. When you're short-sided or facing a poor lie, the new Pro V1 and Pro V1x will still check and you're going to be able to keep it on the putting surface. Spin is a big key on those scoring shots."
