That could very well be the cause for those impact marks. I would work with a Titleist Club Fitter to see if you need to shorten the overall club length. Below are a couple Titleist Fitting Centers near you:

You are correct on the milling. The new California putters have a deep milling, which allows for softer feel and better sound. That is one of the few differences you will notice when comparing the two.
