High ball flight

  1. Hello,

I plan on getting new irons this year and the reason I'm writing here is that I have a really high ball flight with my current irons (695 mbs; S300 shafts).  I still put out the distance i.e. 7iron 178 yards yet when it comes to playing even in the slightest wind conditions, I will lose a good amount of distance.  I have a 112 mph swing speed so do I need to get stiffer shafts and if so, what are some recommendations?

    Chris,

Consider the shaft you are playing.  One thing that a Club Fitter will be able to work with you on is if you are getting an optimal ball flight.  They will note the launch angle and spin you are generating, and recommend a shaft to get you there.  There is a chance that your ball flight may be effected by your flex, and you may need to go stiffer.  Just know that going stiffer in the same shaft model only changes the weight and launch very slightly.

I would recommend either going with a stiffer or maybe heavier shaft. You could also reduce the loft by 2 degrees and see if that helps.

I would either try the S400 or X100 DG shafts and stay away from the PX. Nothing against them but I feel they promote a higher Traj.

    Chris,

I learned about 10 years ago and I quote -- " The head of the club will affect the ball flight much more than the shaft " -- True Temper shaft engineer.  So the shaft is the least of variables that will change your traj.  In this order here is what affects ball flight - 1) The swing, 2) the head -- loft, cg location, lie angle, model type.... then the shaft.
The best fitter will also be a good instructor that can help you sort through these options.  You MUST BE FITTED OUTDOORS HITTING OFF OF REAL GRASS, USING A LAUNCH MONITOR, PRO V1 GOLF BALLS AND REFERRING TO THE TITLEIST FITTING MANUAL.
     THE ONLY WAY!!

Do not waste money going to somebody and let them simply change your shafts - 95% chance it will NOT have a dramatic affect on the ball flight.

  5. Definitely try the C-Tapers, great feel, good launch, lower spin.

If your hitting a 7 iron 178 you would probably need a xflex as well but as always get fitted!
