I'm currently playing PX 6.5 which are supposed to be soft stepped 1. On the frequency machine they come in at 6.5 and had the same frequency as an X100. I'm wondering which flex in a C Taper would most closly match without getting stiffer. If anything I'd like to error 1/4 flex softer (6.25-6.5). Someone told me X and someone else told me S+. when I used the fitting tool on the KBS site it suggested S+.

I would suggest the CTaper S. These shafts are extremely stiff for a standard labelled stiff shaft. I currently play a soft stepped Ctaper is that I would think tests around 6.0. I haven't afficially tested it though. RC

Thanks for the reply.  In your response, you didn't say what flex you play in CTaper that comes out to a 6.0.  I'm guessing you play CTaper S flex.

Unlike the general theme in the golf industry of playing the softest shaft you can control, I take the approach of playing the stiffest shaft I can flex.  This way I get more control and I don't feel like it hurts my distance because my experience is that if you can get a stiffer shaft to flex, you will get more distance because a stiffer shaft will recoil harder into the ball and launch it farther.  You can't get lazy when playing a stiffer shaft but I'm out to play the best golf possible.  I'm about a 6 handicap by the way.  I'm smaller in stature and I play an X flex Motore F1 75 gram shaft in my driver and I'd say my normal drive with carry and roll is about 280 but when I'm really loose and hitting it well, I'm getting 310 out of it.  But the biggest thing is the control I get from it.  I was custom fit for a driver a while back and it was the worst shaft for me that I'd ever played.  It was some kind of Fujikura Speeder S flex 65 gram shaft and I had no control with it.  I couldn't feel the club in my backswing, My agressive swing didn't have the patients to wait for the club to load and release, etc.

The bottom line is that I have a fear of ending up with a shaft that is too soft regardless of what any computer says.  Instead of getting fit, I look at it as I need to test shafts and see what feels good to me and what ball flight I like.  I know what I'm looking for, I don't really need a computer to tell me what I need.  I think the computer can help refine your choice but I believe shaft testing should be the starting point and once you find a few you like, use the computer to refine launch and spin.

Would you still recommend CTaper S?  My guess is that I need to test S and S+ and see how they feel and I may end up needing to soft step an S+.

Here's an update.  I did some testing today.  I took an old 6 iron and had it reshafted with a CTaper S+.  My current irons have Project X 6.5 shafts that frequency at 6.5.  The CTaper came in at about 6.2.  I took both clubs to the range and the CTaper feels much softer than the Project X as it has a much more flexible tip.  Also, everyone talks about CTaper being a low flight shaft which is not at all true.  I was hitting it very high but I hit my Project X's high as well.  I thought about trying an X flex in the CTaper but decided to go with the S+.  I was affraid that the X would end up being too stiff and heavy.  I'm having one of Titleists premier clubfitters here in Scottsdale build me a set of Titleist irons and they said that they could get a few more CPM's out of the shafts and get them around 6.4.  They are a great feeling shaft and the ball rockets off of them.  I think they were going a little farther than the Project X shafts and doing so with more consistency.  I'm a little worried about the soft tip but I think I'll be able to get used to it.
