I currently play to an 11 hdcp using the Titleist AP1 710 irons with steel stiff shaft: However, I noticed I am losing a little distance on my 4 and 5 irons. I hit the 5 around 185yds. Should I switch to the AP1 712 with regular shafts?

First, does it feel like you are hitting the 5 iron as cleanly as you do the 6 iron and below?

Does the 5 iron feel harsh vs the 6 iron? (this may indicate need for shaft flex change) .  When you get to shorter irons, the distance differance between shaft flexes gets more minimal (one time I took two exact same 9 irons, one with stiff and one with regular and the distance diff was 5 yards).

It is more likely a need for set makeup change (you aren't hitting the longer clubs as well).   If little is gained on equally well hit shots and you lose distance more as you go to longer clubs, it is time to switch from a long iron to a hybrid,    When a longer hybrid is little gain over another hybrid that indicates switch to a fairway wood.  If no gain from a longer fairway wood, don't carry it.

If you are hitting a 5 iron 185 yards, that is almost borderline Stiff/X flex.  The "normal" distance for a 5 iron with R flex is 160-170 yards (145 yards carry on a 7 iron is borderline R/S).

I play to a similar handicap (12).   My setup is driver (13* draw A flex but may play R because the shaft has been shortened from 45 3/4 to 45) - 5/18 FW (R flex), 4/21-5/26-7/34 hybrids (R flex), 7-PW AP1s (R300), 4 Vokeys (S200).  My main purpose of the 34 is backup for the 7 and 8 irons in certain situations.  I don't carry a 3 wood because I hit a 5 wood just as far.  My distance on my 6 iron varies too much so I use a hybrid.  I also don't hit a 3H well but can crush a 5 wood.  I also have a rather vicious short game.

    Marcelo,

If you feel that the ball has a ballooning ball flight, there is a chance the shaft is a little soft and causing too much spin.  I would visit a Club Fitter to have him put you on a launch monitor, which will help determine if you are launching the ball too high or spinning them too much.

A couple locations you could check out would be:

I had a prior experience with a shorter iron getting better distance and a shaft change did the trick. Before I got the AP1s I played Eye 2 irons. Originally the shafts on the 6-PW were mixed (KT-M stiff on 6-7, DG X on 8 iron, ZZ Lite stiff on 9-PW). On the field, I was getting 3 more yards with the 8 iron vs the 7 and the 6 iron was only 5 yd more vs 8 iron. Ironically the launch monitor showed the 7 iron was getting proper distance and there was a 25 yard gap with the 8 iron (the DCI 981 8 iron with regular shaft showed 19* launch angle and the Eye 2s were 13). I reshafted the Eye 2s to TT Lite XL - the 8-PW didn't change but got noticeable gains on the 6 and 7 irons (10 yard gaps between all the clubs). The reason I mentioned about changing set makeup is that I don't hit a 5 or 6 iron as well as I did 20 years ago (I also found a loss of distance in 2007 on a 6 iron vs 7 with a set of irons I carried for 28 years). My distance on 5 and 6 irons vary 10-15 yards with so-called good hits. From the 7 down thru the XW, my distance is pretty pinpoint. I have pretty consistent distance on the hybrids and fairway woods. For instance, I know my 5/26 will go right around 160 yards every time (I get 145-150 from the 7 iron).
