  1. I recently fitted for a set of CB irons with X100 shafts standard length and Golf Pride new decade midsized grips if that makes a difference. The clubs feel great but seem too light. I took them in and had them weighed and they ranged from C10-D0. Isn't the X100 a heavier shaft? And shouldn't that make the swing weight heavier? How can I add weight? Thanks.

    John,

There shouldn't be any change in swing weight, assuming you haven't done anything to the overall length.  If you would like to have your clubs swing weighted and double checked, you can send them to our Warranty and Repairs Department through any authorized Titleist retailer.

Those clubs should come in at a D2-D3 range.  The only thing I can think of is that the grip being a mid-szed would effect the SW but not by much.

All or most Titleist clubs (2011-2012 with std options) come D2 standard and thats w a Golf Pride Tour Velvet grip which is appox 50grams.  Going to a mid sized grip in the NDMC would add approx 9 grams to the butt making the swingweight lighter.

Have Titleist look at them, they are the best and will give you true readings.

all this talk about swing weight - remember this is a feel issue. It is a decision only the player can make.  Don't lose sight of the forrest for the trees.... when we fit someone it is for the purpose of creating great ball flight.  If it doesn't affect ball flight then a good fitter will not lend much to that discussion --it is player dependent.
Back in 1995 when we first started the Titleist fitting we had their R & D team do lots of tests for us so we would know what REALLY affected ball flgiht. One of the many tests was swing weight. This was with players hitting shots with a 5 iron and we had the swing weights vary from C5 to D5 - the result was less than one yard of distance difference!  Most of the players could not discern a difference between C8 and D4!
Just remember to be concerned with whatever variable has SIGNIFICANT affect on ball flight.  Feel is part of playing golf , but feel issues in club fitting are for the players to decide.

Midsize grips, as a general rule, weigh 67 grams vs 52 for a standard rubber grip and that lowers the swingweight by 3 points.

With Winn Excel RF or Winn Lite Dri Tac, mid or oversize only differ by a gram vs standard.

The difference between a Golf Pride Tour Wrap midsize (67g) and Winn Excel RF (43g) is almost 5 swingweight points!

    Hi John,

To my knowledge if you have a swing weight between C10-D0 means that it is heavier on the grip. If you're looking to have the swing weight more towards D1-D3, I suggest that you put a lighter weight grip so that the weight will shift more towards the head end of the club.

A heavier shaft doesn't necessarily mean that you will get a heavier swing weight. For example, I have X-Forged irons that are using NSPro 950GH S shafts (the weight of the shaft is 98g) with a swing weight of D1. Compared to my AP2 712 with DGS200 (shaft weight 128g) and with a swing weight of D0.

I looked up the standard set of CB on Titleist's web and apparently the swing weight is at D2 using a stock Titleist grip. I suspect that your Golf Pride grips is heavier to those from Titleist, hence the lower swing weight (I may be wrong). My advice is to have your 6 iron replaced with a stock Titleist grip or that with an equivalent weight and see where the swing weight is shifting towards.

Hope it works well for you.

    Cheers!

The New Decade mid size weigh 59 grams which is 9 gr more than our standard grip.  That does affect the swingweight by 2+ swingweights.  Please take your clubs back to your pro shop and have them set up a Repair.  We can bring them in to see if we can reweight them to a D2 for you.

We would always recommend specifying a swingweight if you are changing any component from standard.  The swingweights that we list are for a standard build - meaning standard length, shaft and build.

Thanks for the replies. I had ordered the clubs through the PGA Superstore and they came with the midsized Tour Velvet grips.  I didn't care for those grips so I went to the new decade ones instead. They actually don't feel bad light but it is noticeable. I guess the area that I am really having the problem with is the transition to my wedges. I got a new set of Vokey wedges and they were just off the shelf but I put the New Decade's on. I have a 50 degree and it feels a LOT heavier. I think I am going to put a few more rounds into them before I try sending them in. They feel awful light but I do hit them well and if the weight doesn't matter much in that regard maybe i'll leave them.

The other thing is most golfers can't detect a swingweight difference of 2-3 points (3 pt may be subtle).

    Hello everyone,

If I may piggyback on this discussion:  I recently purchased a 910 D3 8.5* with Project X 6.0 shaft and noticed that the wight on the club has a green dot instead of the common red dot.  Does anyone know the difference in weight in the green vs red dot.

I like the club, it just has a different feel than what I'm used to, which is my 910 D3 9.5* with Diamana Ahina (whiteboard) and red dot on the weight.

Also, I checked the specs on Titleist's website and noticed that the D3 8.5* with Project X shaft is a custom order (the 8.5* is stock, which I've used before).  The Project X 6.0 shaft is one of the stock shaft options available for the D3 9.5*.  Interesting.

Thank you in advance for any info you can provide.

    Greg
