I have a Vokey SM4 54-11 and a Vokey TVD M-Grind 58 I was fitted for by Joe Burdess early last year.  I am having a hard time with my touch shots around the green with my TVD-58.  I am unsure what the bounce is on that club but I am steep with all of my clubs and I seem to chunk that wedge alot.  Out of the sand both clubs are fantastic and I am confortable opening the faces on both clubs in the sand.  My question is do I work on my swing or do I find a lob wedge that I can confidently use in both the closed and open positions around the green?  The shot that hurts me the most is the dreaded tight lie, bunkers around you and you have hit it high and land it softly shot.

My thought was why not have a high lofted-high bounce wedge you can take 3/4 to full swings with and not have to worry about finessing the shot.  ANy help would be appreciated.

    Marc,

Thanks for your post.  The TVD-M 58 has 8 degrees of bounce.  There are options available with more bounce, but I am not sure if that will be the answer for you.  Based on the testing we did at The Glen Club, there was a reason the TVD 58 was the obvious choice. You mention that you are steep with all your clubs and chunking is the issue.  If you are leaning the club too far forward and getting steep then you are taking all the bounce off the club.  More bounce on another wedge might help, but I think you will probably see the same issues.

Here is a tip I received from the best short game player I have ever seen and former world #1:  Keep the shaft of the club more vertical at address, control your swing with your chest rotation instead of all arms and hands.  This technique will let you be more effective at using the bounce of the wedge.

    Thanks,

    Joe Burdess

Thanks Joe.  This will save me from buying another wedge and force me to be a better wedge player.  As always I value your opinions & feedback.

Thanks Joe. I think I needed a little reassurance. You're the best.

I have an SM4 60-10 bent to 59*.  It is also M grind.  I have no problem playing off a dirt clod or hardpan lie and it works well in various sand conditions.

Chunking is caused by too much hand action and casting the club or coming over the top on the downswing.   Concur with what Joe B said.

Ball position in relation to the torso should be the same regardless (looking at the ball from behind and about even with the inner part of your shirt pocket).   What I do to play a high soft shot that lands on a dime from a tight lie with the 60 is play it with an open blade where it appears slightly back in the stance.  My issue with too far forward is skulling it.  I also carry a 64 degree wedge but play more of a digging shot since a T grind tends to skull
