    I have recently been fitted with new Titleist equipment, with the following set make up;

    913D3 Driver

913F 15deg Fairway Wood (loft set higher to 16.5 Deg)

    AP2 3-PW

    SM4 volleys 52, 54, 60

i originally asked my pro to fit me with this many wedges as I felt my game would improve with my inside 100m shots.

Lately though I feel weather I should drop a wedge for another fairway wood or hybrid.

I hit my 3 iron around 180-200m and with my fairway set to 16.5deg it closes the gap so that i hit it about 200-215m.

My problem is when I need to hit those long par 5's and need something 215-230m (normally a 3 wood). It's not every round but I just wonder if my bag is bottom heavy?

    Thoughts?

I would say the wedge game is the one that needs to be really dialed in so you may want to review the 52 and 54 since they would be pretty close in loft and distance. It really depends on your own personal gaps through the set but as a general rule you would take your driver distance and subtract your 60 deg wedge full shot distance then divide by 12 to get the yardage between each club. I would suggest you check the trackman.com website to locate the closest facility near you and ask if they do gap fittings.

Oops, my mistake. I meant 52, 56, 60 is whats in my bag. I have thought about dropping the 52 and 56 in lieu of a 54 and a hybrid? This would keep my gaps consistent in my wedges and give me another club between 3i and 3w. Do you think that is wise or better to keep the 3 wedges?

    David-

How comfortable are you hitting partial swing wedge shots? Do you feel like you would be able to dial in yardages for half, 3/4 and full swings with a PW, 54, 60 set up? If yes, then you may want to consider adding that hybrid.  If you're more comfortable hitting full swing wedge shots, then you'll probably end up shooting lower scores with the four wedge set up and a slight gap in your long game clubs, especially if you rarely encounter that 215-230 shot.  Either way, work with your pro as he knows your game and the shots you will typically encounter on your course.  Hope this helps!

  5. You may wish to also consider setting up your bag not only for yardage gaps but also for the type of golf course you play most frequently.  For instance, does your course have long or short par 3's? does your course have tricky par 5's where a specific approach yardage is frequently needed, if so you may need two types of clubs that can go that distance depending on the lie of the ball (you may be choking down on one club etc...).

Just a random thought to add to the other great points so far!

IMO, your AP2 wedge is 50, then you go to a Vokey 52.  I would widen that gap a bit for a way to drop a wedge.  What I did was AP2 50, Vokey 54 and 58.  That still leave 4 wedges in my bag and everything from 4 iron up is a 4 degree even gap.

I play driver, 3W-7W, 4-7H, AP1 8-PW (36-41-46), SM4 54-11 and 60-10 (bent 1* strong) and 64-07.  There is a need for 64* wedges on some of the munis in San Diego because the greens are hard.  Some of the better courses have slow greens and I've even had a 9 iron stop dead.

Like one of the others said, if you feel comfortable with partial shots, you don't need as many wedges; furthermore, 52 and 54 is a bit close in gap (could consider bending the 54 1* strong and maybe doing the same to the 60).

If one wanted to play full swing all the way down to 50 yards,  could go PW-52-56-60-64.  Unfortunately that limits the longer clubs.

There are some good tips on distance control.  For every 1/2" you choke down on full swings, you subtract 10 yards.  1/2 swings is 5 yards. 1/4 swings is 2.5 yards.
