So I've acquired some cash, and I'm thinkin' of buyin' me a nice new wedge, as my golf obsessed brain will allow me to think/buy of nothing else. I have a 45, 55, and 60 degree wedge, so I though, I'll get a gap wedge. However, I can't really remember a time when I had to make a crucial position between a soft P and hard sand. And my 60* is an old Acuity N3 i took from my dad, who doenn't even know how long he's had it, and or if he bought it used. So perhaps i should update my 60* instead of like a 50* cuz I think I'll need that more often. BTW, i love my 60 and use it for many greenside shots. So I was thinkin' of the Scratch 8620, cally Jaws, Or maybe CG15 (zip) or Vokey spin milled. I want the most spinning wedge, but aren't gonna get that cheap thrill Spin Doctor, though it is tempting. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated, if they are unbiast not some "Geoff Ogilvy uses Titleist and so do 56 other pros and cally only has 23 so use titleist." If you truly believe vokey's are the best, then I guess say so. Either way, I need your thoughts.

Personally, I like vokey wedges more than any other wedge because they spin very nicely, theyre easy to hit, and they are a great weight. If I were you, I'd get a vokey. Make sure you get the right bounce though, that can affect a lot of the way you hit it.

Vokeys all the way! My first ever Vokey was 2007 - a 258-12 that was a great all-around wedge. I tried CG15 DSG 58 and 64 wedges. Good for most pitching situations and the 58 was great out of wet bunkers. The limitation was hitting off a tight lie. I had a Vokey Spin Milled c-c 60-07 and 64-07. I used the 60-07 primarily for tight lies within 50 yards and made some excellent pitch and chip shots. The 64 was for the occasional shot from a small bunker or soft turf to a tight pin. They had the opposite limitations: off a tight lie, the 64 is no added value and I fare better with the sand wedge off turf vs the 60-07. I just replaced both of them with a Spin Milled 62-07 c-c and it is a bit more versatile than both put together (and it even works in sand). My prime intended use is for those downhill pitches from a mound to a green below and out of hard, deep bunkers. I reintroduced the Spin-Milled 58-12 c-c into my bag because of the versatility. I can play a tight lie by delofting a little. I can do a digging shot if called for. It is nice to have two sand wedges. My bare minimal wedge setup is the P, the 54-11 and 62-07. The W and 58-12 are "nice to have." So my current wedge setup is DCI 981 P (47) and W (51), Vokey Spin-Milled c-c (54-11 bent to 55-12, 58-12, 62-07).
  4. Of course Vokey's are the best wedges out there! Some of the other companies that are known for their wedges aren't the same as they used to be. Why? Because their designers left to go to other companies, and so on. Vokey has been very loyal to Titleist and definitely know's what he's doing. Did you watch the new SM4 blog video; where Mr. Vokey stated that they tested over 50 grooves configurations to narrow it down to the perfect one. Let alone the loft/bounce combos on the Vokey's, now more grind options. Some of the other companies standard bounces are waaaaay to high, their soles/grinds are all the same...I suggest you go get properly fit for a Vokey wedge to determine the best wedge for your game.

    Domenico,

Thanks for your note and your support of Vokey wedges.  You have an interesting dilemma.  In general, we recommend that you have no more than 15 yards between each of your wedges.  Having a 50* in your bag would definitely help you on full shots as there is probably 25-30 yards between your P and Sand wedges.

If you can only purchase one wedge, it might make more sense to replace the 60 if you you use that as your go-to club around the green.  Having fresh Spin Milled grooves from greenside rough will be a huge advantage for you.

Good luck with your purchase and let us know if we can answer any more questions for you.

I have all Vokeys and they are all conforming. But I would recommend either the Spin Milled Vokeys as they are very good clubs or if you want a second option my friend has the Jaws wedges and they do spin very well. One thing to consider is what ball you play and how often you want to replace it if it gets chewed up by the grooves on your wedge.

Hopefully you have a locale golf store that can help and I am sure the folks at Titleist want you to give their product a try but would want you to get what is best for your game.

I would suggest you buy the 60*. if you can cover the gap between the 45 and 55 with haf shots then you doing well with the short game. the other option you have is to get a club fitter to bend your 55 to a 53. this will close the gap between 45 and 55 the 53 is a nice wedge stil for longer bunker shots and from the fairway. a lot of Pro's use 52/53* with a 60*. Yes the gap is stil big and you have a bigger gap beteen 53 and 60 but it looks as ifyou do well with the 60. Good luck and keep it simple.

When I had the 60-07, I had quite a few great golf shots. Most notable is a 20 yard over the bunker hole-out for birdie on Riverwalk Friars #8. Quite a few par saves and an occasional birdie hole-out. I never used it in soft bunkers (the 64-07 worked better there). I've also noticed quite a few pros use a 60 in greenside bunkers. I just looked at the Vokey wedge spec page and, if you are a righty, there is a 60-10 available. Two years ago I constructed a Snake Eyes 600W 60-10 lob wedge and it worked OK in wet bunkers as well as the occasional shot off dirt clods. It was also pretty good off turf (I also put it back in the bag for awhile because my CG15 DSG 58 and 64 had a limitation - couldn't do digging shots that well). I returned the 58-12. I put it through the paces with the 54-11 (55-12) and 62-07 and the other two work better. I have an even spacing between wedges (47-55-62) and my short game focuses on my distance control for pitching.
  9. FWIW, my wedge set composes of a 48, 52, 56 and 60.  I ensure the wedges are their true loft and lie about every 10 rounds since they bend easily being a forged metal like the Vokey's.   If it helps, I use the 60 out of sand most frequently.
