    Hey everyone-

I am heading to get fitted for a driver and I am interested in purchasing a 910 D2...I am a 17 handicap and not very consistent off the tee with my current miz MP-001 driver...I have read that this driver is not suited for higher handicaps...what do you guys think?

    Thanks!

If you're a 17 handicap, you obviously wouldn't want to use a 8.5 or 9.5 driver. So what does your ball flight do? Do you slice? Hook? Top? Sky? Have someone shoot a video of you hitting tee shots. Does your front foot lift a little bit on the backswing? (if so, anchor it and take a more compact backswing - you don't need a classic "parallel" backswing, aka the big 90 degree one). A lot of swing faults occur due to the back foot getting stuck on the down swing. The biggest cause of slicing is trying to hit the ball too hard. You come over the top with an outside-in swing because your arms take over. Revolution Golf has some nice tips. The length of the driver is good (45"). The lie angle is 58.5. The latest driver for Mizuno is 58 lie angle and 45.5" I found out I fare better with a draw driver. My strong shot is a power fade. If I hit a neutral driver straight, the trajectory is way too high.

I'm really curious, where did you read such a thing?

JIm McLean recommends using a 10.5 driver with 44-45" shaft. The lower loft would exaggerate the slice or hook.

    nick,

many people have said over the years that titleist equipment is best suited for a "player".  believe what you will, but don't be dissuaded by that.  heck, i'm a 14 and i was fitted to a 910d3 (9.5*).  now i have to do everything humanly possible to *miss* a fairway.

now what i will argue is that if your consistency is like army golf (left, right, left...), then it's more of the indian than the arrow.  however, if you like the d2, then definitely try having one fitted to you.  you'll find out thru fitting that maybe the d2 is the right driver for you or maybe not.  also, the fitter should be able to narrow in on your ball flight issues and adjust the club to achieve the best possible launch/spin combination.

    good luck with your fitting!

    - fred

There is no rule that a person with a 14 or 17 handicap has to use "game improvement" clubs nor a scratch golfer using "player" clubs. There is also nothing that says if you use senior flex shafts that you can't hit a driver 200 yards. John Daly uses regular flex and last time I checked, he hits the ball well over 300 yards. Someone who is a 14-17 handicap may have pro distance on woods and irons but may have a short game that needs attention. Likewise, there may be a scratch golfer that has average distance but a tremendous short game and fares better with a lofted wood vs a hybrid or long iron (even Gary Player fesses up to carrying a 9 wood these days).

Thank you to everyone that responded...I got fitted for a D2 with the Diamana Blue 65 Stiff Shaft...I was hitting it 20 yards farther than my stiff shaft and the control was better as well...can't wait to get it out on the course!!!
