I hit my 56 100 and my pw 120. How much distance will i gain with a 54 and will it be ge changing.

Didn't you say you use 54 and 60?

    So, what is your question

About 5-7 yards. You can easily work your PW down to 110 by choking halfway down. You would have to allow for more roll when pitching.

I use a 54-11 and I bent it to 55. I'm assuming you have a 54-11 so bending it to 56 results in a 56-13 (high bounce). The reason I bent mine to 55 is that I have been pretty comfortable with 55-12 for the past 3 years. The benefit of the 54 is that it is a little less work in the bunker for a longer shot. I don't use my 54 for a full swing golf shot unless absolutely necessary. My full shot with the 54 is 80 yd. I'll work my 9 iron (45*) and my 50 down to 40 yards in most cases. Most of the time I'll use the 54 from 35 in and occasionally pitch from 50 yards.

Learn how to hit Golf shots instead of just distances. If you have say 115yds try taking your 9 iron and just use an arm only type of swing not alot of weight transfer or shoulder turn, Just let those arms swing. It is a very good shot to have when the greens are soft and you have trouble putting to much spin on the ball. Or go with a 52 56 and 60.

I agree with Brent W. You can do quite a bit with a 9 iron or PW. I personally don't hit full golf shots with my Vokeys unless essential. If one treats the 7-9 irons in the same manner as wedges, that adds dimension to the game. Think about pitching a 7 iron into the wind vs a full swing with a 52. Or pitching a 9 iron 80 yds vs choking down all the way on a GW or hitting a full shot with a SW. I've actually done a half swing pitch with a 9 iron from 60 yards to a 2 tiered green slightly uphill. I've also done a 100 yard chip shot with a 5H. Practice the odd-ball shots like a severe downhill lie on a mound to a green below. Doing routine flat level 25 or 50 yard pitch shots and chipping is child's play. I practice a lot of over the bunker shots and it paid off because I holed out a 20 yard shot with a 60 for the bird one time. I practice cut and flop shots also (this including hitting over a 12 foot tree from 10 yards behind it with a 62). I've been working on the left-handed shots with an upside down iron also.

Expounding on my other post where I agree with Brent..... my purpose in using the Vokeys is for scoring. 2* less loft does make it less work on approach shots and bunker shots and you have a bit more roll. You can use more of the bounce with a less lofted wedge. You should practice distance control (and this would even include a 5H). Take full golf shots full grip, halfway choked down the grip and all the way choked on the grip. Do ditto with full pitches, half swing pitches, 1/4 swing pitches and chip shots. There may be a time when you would want to hit a 100 yard 7 iron shot (into the wind) or take a 60 yard 9 iron half swing pitch vs a 60 yard full pitch with a SW (such as hitting to an elevated green with the pin on the back). Explore the capabilities of your irons and hybrids.

I take full swings with my Vokeys all the time.  I play 60, 56, 52.  There's also good advice on chocking down.  I think you can take about 5 or so yards off simply by choking down a bit and taking a swing.

Lou- I love exploring all the shots your clubs hold; that's great advice.  There's so much you can do with each club by simply altering your stance, grip, ball position, and face angle.

The rule of thumb on choking down is 10 yards for every 1/2" on a full swing, 5 yards per on 1/2 swings and 2.5 on 1/4 swings or chip shots. I'll do full swings on the 50 more often. The main reason I don't often do a full swing on the 54 or the 62 is it is less work to pitch the 9 iron or 50 and I control the distance better. I did have to do a full swing from 50 yards with the 62 last week to a pin that was maybe 15 feet from the front of the green and dropped the ball 6" from the hole. 3 years ago I would have a sudden onset of shankitis with the short irons. At that time I carried a 38H as a backup and practiced partial shots. It came in handy when my 9 iron went inop and I ended up hitting pitch shots with the 38 to restore my swing. I still carry a 34H but it is more of a specialty club since I changed my swing to eliminate shankitis (compact backswing with minimal weight shift going back). I use it out of rough sometimes instead of irons. It is also a nice conversation piece since nobody carries a persimmon wood, let alone a hybrid of that type. Working clubs is part of practicing Golf Shots. It is rather boring to simply practice knocking the snot out of it dead straight (and that is what too many do at the range). I practice pitching with the 7 wood and 5H sometimes - these come in handy for hitting under low trees (don't do that much lately, though, since I am much straighter these days; however, I have had to use one of these shots).
