I just got two brand new SM4 Oil Can wedges bent 3* flat and 1* strong on the loft with Project X 6.0 steel shafts. These wedges aren't spinning as good as my old Vokey 200 Series Wedges which had S200 steel shafts and the old grooves. On pitch shots from the fairway or chips shots on the fringe or on full approach shots from the fairway and rough the just aren't spinning and stopping like the old ones. The only time I've been able to stop them and back them up have been from fairway bunker pitch shots from 50 to 80 yards and flop shots. But the flop shots still even roll out. Is there a break in period with these or I am just going to have to get used to this if I am using C-C grooves or am I going to have to get the 200 series off of Vokey's website with the C-C grooves that aren't spaced as close together as the SM4's are? This is weird because my 710 AP2'S still stop and back up and they have the new grooves too?! Any input is great thanks guys.

I too have noticed that the SM4 fail to generate a significant amount of backspin on the ball, compared to my AP2 irons. All of my full swing SM4 shots roll-out, which I dislike. I guess I will need to make an adjustment.
I just bought 2 SM4 wedges a few weeks ago and I'm ready to go back to my old Vokeys .... I don't generate enough clubhead speed to put the spin on the SM4's. My old Vokeys I could stop on a dime but these are a different story. Titleist and other companies should build clubs for "pros" and for the average golfer as well. Thats why the groove rule doesn't go into effect right away for the regular and amateur golfer. I understand that the USGA wants to make it as difficult as possible for the pros that beat up these golf courses that are 7500 yards or longer by putting these rules on equipment ... but it shouldn't be put on the amateur who wants to enjoy the game and has no intention of ever joining the tour! There should be seperate rules on equipment for the amateur . . . not saying we need to all play "winter rules" but
One key element of the game is overcoming the variables and challenges - fast sloping greens, tight fairways, deep rough, hazards, 600-yard par 5, and the wind. View the new groves as just that, another challenge. Don't allow the new challenge to beat you, instead face the challenge head-on and overcome it.
Friendly words of encouragement...
I can understand that these are elements of the game Beyond MY control .... but clubs on the other hand. Companies have put a restriction on distance (the C.O.R.) and everything else sorry ... just venting ... I guess I was expecting more from the wedges
Jacob..
Not sure why you're not getting the same spin.. from the fairway and around the green, my SM4's spin just as much as my old Vokey's from a year ago. The thing I notice is spin from the rough. That's the biggest difference... but I'm still get the ball to stop and spin back from the fairway with the SM4's with the stock shafts.
Shaft issue will not help here. PX is a lower spin shaft than DG, you might want to consider reshafting with KBS Hi-rev, KBS Wedge S flex or the DG spinner shaft.
For your reference Project X 6.0 FCM at 6.5 and S200 at 5.8.
