  1. Hello,

I recently purchased a new set of 716 AP1's (4-W). I am looking to add an 816 H1 hybrid to the bag to take the place of the 3 iron. I've searched around and have seen that 21 degrees would be the usual replacement, however, the 4 iron in the set is listed at 22 degrees. Just curious if anyone else added the 21 degrees hybrid or just went to the 19 degrees to space out the gap. Thanks for the input.

    Joey,

It would seem that a 19 deg would work best as you can adjust the loft up 2 deg (to 21 deg) or bring it down 1 deg (to 18 deg) using the Sure-Fit hosel. Also keep in mind that the shaft length of the 19 is 2 inches longer than the 4 I AP1 shaft. My gut tells me the 21 deg H1 and 3 iron AP1 would perform similarly from a flat lie. However, I would recommend that just to be on the safe side you go to a fitter to confirm distance gapping though.

    Best Wishes,

I replaced my 4 iron with the 21* H1 and also put the 19* H1 in as a 3 iron which replaced my 5 wood. Gapping is good at least for me. Hit the 19* H1 about 15 yards less than my 3-wood and 15 yards further than my 21* H1. But my fitter made that suggestion am I am really pleased with the results.

I play AP2 716 PW-7i and AP1-716 6i and 5i, all with the same shafts, as fitted by Titleist Certified fitter. I added an 816H1 21 degree, which seems to fit perfectly for me. I sometimes can hit my 5i as far as I sometimes hit my 21*, however when considering all sorts of lies from sitting somewhat down in the rough to tight fairway lies, on average, I would guess my 816 21* is about 10 yards longer than my 5 iron. I use a 915F 5W as my next club up and again, the 816 fits in between it and the 5i nicely.

I was originally thinking that the 23* 816 would be the right choice, but after playing the set up I have now for most of this season, I am happy I went with the 21*.

Since the top of most players' bags are harder to be consistent with, the gapping between clubs is also less consistent. It's a lot harder to hit your 21* the same distance nearly every time as it is to hit your pitching wedge the same distance every time. As a result, for me, having that 21 vs the 23 gives me more chance to get it that extra 10 or 15 yards over my 5 iron when I need it. When I have the room to be long I'll go with the 21. If long is not good, I'll go with the 5i. On average over the course of this season, it has worked very well.
