Yes, but it depends on your shaft core size. What is the shaft you have?

It may seem a little overwhelming but shafts, grips and tape all have different thicknesses.

For example your shaft may have a butt diameter of .600 but a grip with a M58 grip size. A M58 grip is made to go on a .580 butt size shaft to equal a standard size grip. A M60 on a .600 equals standard and so on. So using a M58 on a .600 will result in the final grip size being .620 which is already bigger than standard without using any build up tape yet.

As if that isn't confusing enough you should use a golf club specific build up tape for all layers except the last which is the only layer of double sided tape. Tape has been produced thinner recently as a cost saving measure so getting the right thickness is essential for correct sizing.

I have begun using a caliper to measure the grip size of clubs before re-gripping to ensure the same feel for my players. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Check out GolfWorks for great deals on grips, tape, etc. I just got through regriping my clubs and I like my grips to be 1/32" over standard. I also use Project X shafts in the majority of me set and the base is .600. All grip sizes start with a base of one wrap and I needed 2 more wraps for a total of 3 wraps of double sided tape. You would need 4 wraps plus the base for a total of 5 strips of double sided tape. You could see if the grip you want comes in a mid size which is thicker than the standard grip and you would not need as much tape.

I think you only need to use masking tape for the extra wraps, then only one layer of two-sided on top.

That'd work. It's a preference thing on how you do it. I mean double sided tape is cheap and available in large quantities. It's easy to just keep using it :)
