I’ve been playing 712 AP2’s for years, but competing interests have cut into my golf and practice time. I’ve developed a real bad problem of hitting fat shots with my 5 & 6 irons. Not really a problem with the rest of the bag.

I’ve thought about replacing the 5 iron with a 25* hybrid, But I wonder if a more forgiving iron like the AP1 would do the trick. I’m not looking to change out the whole set, just swapping out the 5&6.

    I'd give the 25 deg 818 H-1 a try.

Using a hybrid instead of a 5 iron is a separate issue When striking the 5-8 irons well, you should get 10-15 yards between each club. If you don't get that separation between the 5 and 6 iron, then "something" to gain the club separation is in order. Besides hybrid, other alternatives to the AP2 are T-MB, AP3, and AP1. A good fitter can help recommend. #1 cause for fat shots is poor weight transfer from rear to front - "hanging back". An evaluation either by yourself or with a pro to determine the problem/swing fault will be more productive than trying to use hardware to solve that problem. With longer shafts and trying to squeeze a little more distance with the longer irons, that may exacerbate the problem that may exist with the shorter irons.. ...I can be proof that you can still hit a fat shot with a hybrid.

Sounds more like an issue with your swing plane coming down too steep than your club especially if you're hitting the rest of your irons just fine. Most of the time fat shots come down to alignment issues, so maybe check for that first? GI irons have forgiveness in mishits that are off-center, so they allow the ball to go relatively straight with minimal distance loss. They won't fix your swing and keep you from hitting a fat shot.
