In order for Titleist to have a great warranty program, it is important that the clubs go through their full production assembly and quality process. If people add their own shafts and install incorrectly, it would be very difficult for Titleist to know and might create a large increase in warranty returns.

So the head price would be closer to $550 anyway. While Titleist includes testing of outsourced parts like shafts, the heads are the proprietary piece. Expect no bargains on heads.

The Titleist warranty is for the original head, hosel adapter, and shaft. Without control of the hosel adapter on the shaft, they wouldn’t want a reputation for the Surefit hosel breaking due to the shaft adapter. So…with the investment in trade name and reputation, there is more downside to catering to a small group of tinkerers rather than protecting the name for the vast majority of golfers that prefer a full club purchased retail What they really don’t want is to sell heads for $400 and have small shops selling new drivers for $499 to compete with factory assembled units with multiple process checks for the final product to meet specs.

Good point. If that head breaks during the warranty period it can be replaced. Fortunately for me, I have never had that happen to me with Titleist equipment. Cannot say that about other manufacturers. Golf club manufacturers, unfortunately are not in the golf parts business. They sell golf clubs to their accounts. Some are custom fitted, such as yourself. I do not foresee this changing in the future. People will continue to upgrade to new drivers every cycle as long as they can get increased distances. I have even bought a new driver and put my upgraded shaft from the previous cycle in it. Having tested it at the fitting. It is all about choices. There is no perfect answer.
