Played yesterday with my senior men's Friday morning group and as we rounded hole number 12 felt the monkey climb upon my back. Now I was riding and we were keeping under every bit of shade we could find and keeping our Yetis full of cold water at each water stop. Drink one, fill one. Felt a little uneasy so I soaked my towel and applied that cold compress around my neck, as we pulled out to find my golf ball. That monkey had pushed it right into his territory. The woods. Managed to get out, hit it on the green and make by bogey. Unfortunately on this particular hole, it is hottest on the course with no breeze. Managed to make it thru to the next hole and we did pick up a little breeze and things returned to some degree of normalcy. We made it in in four hours along with the other eight groups, all of us drained. We all looked that we had been in a sauna. That was around twelve thirty and the heat index as pointed out by the pro shop was 106*. Now for you young guys on TT that may not be much, but most of our group averages 70+ years old. I don't care how old you are it just proves no matter how careful you are that heat index is dangerous. As I write this post the heat index (1230 pm) is 110* and our hottest time of the day in the Charleston area is not until around 300 pm. Enjoy this wonderful game, but play it with caution this time of the year where there is high temperatures and humidity. That monkey is watching. Hopefully the fall will be here soon in the south, you know, December. Cheers. =)

Yikes man, dont wish away your summer LOL Us guys more north dont need our season to be any shorter!

Be careful out there, stay cool! One more thing us golfers all need to remember is to wear sunscreen!!

Yeah Chuck, we all gotta be careful out there! This past Saturday we had the North Texas Team Titleist Get Together and went off around 3. It was a scorcher with a little breeze. I personally had 4 32 oz Powerades and filled my 64 oz Hydroflask 2 times. Although myself or any of us didn't feel any ill affects we knew we needed to drink more as once in a while someone would feel the urge to go but of course nothing comes out!

Heat stroke and dehydration are real threats the further above 90 the heat index goes. More so as one gets past 65 and there are medications where dehydration can increase the risk of kidney damage. Fortunately those days are far and few between where I am in the land of the "frozen tundra", but I'll use days off when it is that hot to work on projects in the house. I'll use a cart for 9 on league afternoons when the temp is over 87. I love golf, but not willing to die for it.

Totally agreed, Chuck and good advice on the water consumption. The weather is similarly oppressive in northern GA. While disappointed to not play golf this weekend, it was for the best. No one needs to be a hero and make themselves sick.

As I was checking the mail Saturday, my neighbor who has some sort of satellite on his house that gives out all kinds of weather information, said that at 1045 am the heat index hit 120* in Mt Pleasant where we live, which is across the river from Charleston. Checked the weather channel at 1230 pm and it had dropped down to 112*. My doctor advises against straight PowerAide or Gatorade. I usually mix them 2/3 water and 1/3. It's lots of water and riding carts this time of year. Another super muggy day today. Those Titleist Aussie hats really come in handy. Have never been a fan of sunscreen. At 73 guess have good genes and do go see my dermatologist every year. She says I have very soft skin for an old man and grins and wants to know what brand sunscreen I use. Of course I tell her I do not use it. Guess it is those German genes. Early tees times are recommended for this time of the year. We go off at 8 am. Stay cool and play smart.
  7. I usually start with a full Powerade and every 3rd hole top it off with water, by the end it’s usually water. Keep in mind dehydration also has effects on your thinking, like we need that when golfing. Keep cool!!

Thanks Chuck for reminding us about heat index and hydration. Stay cool and watch out for the monkey. Play well in 2019 and in the future.

Hot, hot and hotter here in the Sunshine State. Gallons of water and ice water towels.

Getting the rain, only bad part is the lightening comes with it and it is in the evening. As we finished yesterday the index hit 111*. As we set down yesterday to continue with the hydration and to cool off before driving home, in comes one of the fools, with respect, who offers up to share a picture of beer. Calls it the nectar of gods. Thanks but no thanks in this weather. Brain dead already, need what cells I already have. A man and woman had overheard our earlier conversation talking about overheating said he had suffered a heat stroke in Palm Springs when the temperature hit 110*. She did say he had been drinking beer most of the day in that dry heat. Sometime, someday in the near future, we can again enjoy cooler days when the humidity drops down and I am so looking forward to it. After all, here in the low country we are blessed to be able to play this wonderful game most of the year, except for the three weeks of winter we have sometime between January and February, and the occasional snowy day that might drop in every so many years.

I moved 17 years ago to flee the heat and sometimes forget just how bad it got. Thanks for the reminder. It was 78* for a high here today and was starting to whine about it being hot. It's easy to forget how fortunate we are here in the Summer months as it almost never gets to 80*. We pay for it in the Winter, but, it's worth it to me to never be in your kind of heat again, Chuck. I'll be the first to admit I'm not man enough to withstand it anymore.

I can handle it to avoid the winter months. August is the worst of it and we just play thru it and have the luxury of being able to play 365. Except when it rains in the low country. Of course I have a FJ Hydrolite Rain Suite for that unless it is too heavy.....and if it is cold I simply put on my FJ Hydroknit Rain Jacket to keep warm.......I would have withdrawals not being able to play in the winter......you guys have three months of cold weather and we have three months of hot weather.......we actually moved here from Memphis where the humidity and temperature was worse, we felt we were getting a break.....saw the heat index get up to 129* while playing Colonial CC years ago when I was young and very stupid. So we moved to a cooler climate also. We love it up to the northern part of the Carolina's. Asheville is our favorite. We love staying at the Grove Park Inn.

No doubt Winter is harsh here. Fortunately, there is golf to be played within an hour of Beech Mountain. I keep a membership at Mimosa Hills in Morganton for the months when our course is closed. Having lived in areas of the country with ridiculous heat and humidity I would be happy to never sweat again. My preference is another layer or two of clothing as I tolerate cold much easier than the alternative. I do submit that those of you that can play through the heat are the "real men".

yeah Chuck not much better here in Ky Humidity is a real killer 80-90 percent with indexes 105-110 will wear you down played in a two day medal play this past weekend. 4.5 hr rounds each day there were 140 golfers. Filled my cooler twice on each side both days and never passed a water station either. We look like we all took a dip in the lake on number 12 just miserable playing like that and no breeze to boot. But there were a lot of nice Titleist iron sets, drivers and other Titleist prizes given away so that helped. Try and stay cool my friend

Best perk on a hot day at the course here is cold, mango scented towels. Awesome.

I know this all too well. I was playing in Arizona last year & nearly had heat stroke. Was taken to the hospital by ambulance (yeah that was fun having an ambulance show up at the golf course) for fluids to get rehydrated. It was so hot that day that I just couldn't replace the water fast enough. I was sweating it all out & couldn't keep up. I was on about #12 when I just couldn't do it anymore ... my muscles started seizing up & I got a headache. It was no joke.
So after that I don't play in the extreme heat & humidity unless I can get off very early in the morning. Otherwise, I just won't play. My life is much more precious than a round of golf. I much prefer the cooler months for sure. That's when I play most of my golf. I'll still wear shorts & short sleeved shirt until it gets below 50* Even after that I still may wear shorts, just with a cold gear shirt on. I guess I'm just hot blooded Irish :)

When conditions get unbearably hot I like to use the chill wraps. (not sure what they're actually called) essentially they are small wraps to go around your neck and have some sort of gel in them. You dip them in water and the gel absorbs some water and keeps your fairly cool.
