Hi, currently play a Phantom 5.5 originally 35” and has 10g weights but have extended to 37” and with a SuperStroke grip with weights to counter balance (I’m 6’5”). Just had a putter fitting and been suggested either a 5.5 or 9.5 at 35” with standard 10g weights. I asked if I just cut my existing 5.5 back to 35” and put the same Scotty grip on it would it not be the same? I was told it would not and would be nowhere near the same and that they wouldn’t do it. Any advice? Am I getting the correct information in the fitting?

  2. Sure seems like it would be the same. Did they explain why it would be different? Seems like they want to sell a putter.

If it’s just extended, then a golf shop would be able to take out the extension and put a new grip on it. I’ve had that done before. You will just have to have the loft and lie angle checked. Don’t spend another $500 on a new one, sounds like they are trying to make a sale.

Might get a second fitter's opinion. Where did you get you fitting? I'm with WK. Personally, I would have asked for an explanation as to why, if they did not give you one. A reputable fitter would have gladly given you one. .

I would think that, instead of cutting it to length, you would want to remove the extension so there isn't the extra bit of weight at the butt end of the shaft. It seems that would put you back to where you started? There might be 2 or 3" of the extension epoxied into the butt end of the shaft, so that might add a bit of weight to that end of the club. It wouldn't be a lot, but it might be enough to notice?
