I would like to get other golfers views on this question.

A five handicaper who wants to take a step to the next level, what do ye feel is most required to improve on?

Patrick I got down to 5.1 this season from 7.5 solely due to short game lessons...compressing ball using bounce etc.Added to this I have worked hard in the gym to improve core and flexibility.A standard answer but boils down to hard work and improving/identifying weaknesses in your own game

Start charting your statistics. They will tell you exactly what your strengths are and where you need to be focusing most of your attention. EVERYONE can always become better from 100 yards and in, and pay particular attention to your putting. If you find that your short game is a strength, try to identify what issues you are facing with your long game. Ball flight, distance, etc. Perhaps it is time to get into a serious golf fitness routine? Finally, make sure your clubs are perfect for you, from shafts, to lie angles, to distances (make sure there are no large gaps in your long game between clubs). Do a complete, honest evaluation of your game, and develop a strategy to make your weaknesses strengths. Best of luck! Chris

Where is this 5 hcp losing strokes?

I'm pretty sure a 5 hcp will know what he needs to work on.
