I have read that several players have lost a club of distance when they switched to the AP irons.  I have experienced the same problem vs my older Titleist irons.  Is this because the metals are different or other reasons why we should loose distance with these irons.

While not having Titleist irons prior to getting my AP2s, I did considerable research and talked to a number of other golfers, both amateurs and Pros that I know and none of them related your experiences with the AP series. That is why I bought them and I actually have increased my distance with them over the Callaway irons I had.

how long have you had the AP irons?  this can just simply be an adjustment. its kind of like many tour pros some pick up the new product line right away and are fine others play their go to set untill the fall series after the championships. Look at our U.S. open champ he's been using 710's and 906's not because their better but because its a comfort level. I'm sure we'll see him in 712's soon enough. he just has to take the time to adjust to them. like you the ball is going to come off the face differently and have a different trajectory and spin im sure the distance will come back and maybe even better.

In general, if you experience a loss of distance, it will be because your previous clubs are stronger lofted (sometimes up to one club stronger) and/or are longer.

This is something you may  also consider. You state that you have been playing Titleist for 20 years, but how long have you been playing?? Being a senior citizen like I am, I have noted that over the years I have lost distance and could that be one of the reasons you are experiencing this loss?? I like to think that I can still crush that little thing like I did 5 years ago, but have come to realize that age does make a difference, but is nothing to be ashamed of.

Just wondering and opining on the loss.

Age definitely does cause a change. Even 6 years ago I hit a 9 iron 135 yards. Nowadays it is about 115-120 or so. When I was 19, I could hit a 7 iron 165 yards and I could hit the ball pretty close to 300 with a 3 wood in high school and even as recent as 1988. I also used stiff flex between 1979-2006. I am 54 now and on a good day I hit a 7 iron 145 yards (and when it is 6:30AM and about 40 degrees out I am good for about 135). I hit a 34H around 150-160 yards, a 10 wood 160-165, a 5H around 165-170. I'm still capable of driving 270 yards but generally hit between 220-240 (and I use a senior flex club that has been shortened to 45"). Although I generally hit a 7 wood about 180, I recently have hit it 225 yards. The big difference between now and 30+ years ago is I hith the ball straighter and have a much better short game.

I appreciate the information, but up until I purchased the AP 2's, distance was not a problem,  I can hit my buddies clubs, etc and get the distance I was used to.  I have read several posts the when people switched to the AP's, they noticed a shortage of distance.  I am experiencing the same thing.  If it is the clubs, then I can have the lofts tweeked to compensate.

AP2 looks like it has pretty much an industry standard set of lofts (3 iron at 21*, 9 iron 43*, PW 47*, GW 51*) and shaft lengths. I would say to grab an AP2 7 iron and one that you know you hit a certain distance and dead straight. Or a similar iron same loft, same shaft. Note the launch angle, ball speed, distance, spin, dispersion and all that. Or go to the driving range and watch the ball flight of both clubs. 1 clublength is a major loft tweak (about 3-4 degrees).

If your clubs were an early forged series irons, there should be virtually no difference unless you are launching the AP2's higher with too much spin. If you were playing DCI's, some of them did have stronger lofts, but the biggest difference is that they were cast with a different metal so they didn't have the same feel as the multi material AP2 irons. The new 712 AP2's have increased MOI so they will be longer on shots not hit as squarely. I would take your older irons and hit them side by side to make a comparison.

I did a bit of test between my DCI 981 irons and Eye 2 irons (using the 6-PW). They have the exact same shaft lengths and grips (Winn Excel RF midsize).

Shafts are almost similar (the DCIs are DG R300 Sensicore and the Eye 2s are TT Lite XL regular). Lie angles are pretty close (Eye Yellow Dot and Titleist +1/2*).

The swingweights differed by about 2 points (the DCIs are D1 and the Pings are C9). The main diff is loft: The Eye 2 6-8 irons differ from the DCIs by 1 degree more lofted. The Eye 2 9 is 2* more lofted and the PW is 1.5* more lofted. The DCIs are about 2 yards longer on the 9 and PW. The 6-8 irons are about even.

AP2 irons have the same loft specs as DCI 981s and are 1/4" longer. DCIs are cast (from what I have been told). I have a set of Lynx Black Cat irons (they belong to my nephew now) with the same lofts and shaft lengths as both the DCIs and Eye 2s (but Golf Pride Wrap grips) and have to go 1 club longer with them.

These also have DG R300. With all things being equal, it would take a loft difference of 4* or so to change distance by 10 yards. An overly high launch angle could cause a loss of distance (higher ball flight and less roll).
