Last October I began a new career with a homeless shelter/program for families. We are the only shelter in the state of Kentucky that keeps the entire family together through the crisis of temporary homelessness. After I started, I found out that our big annual fundraiser is a golf marathon; 100 holes in one day. As a staff member, I feel it is my duty to participate in this event and raise funds for our great organization. ;-) However, I have never played that many holes in one day. So, I was wondering if anyone has played in an event such as this? If so, what do I need to do to prepare myself for this event? How should I train? What should I take with me on the day of the event? What should I avoid?

Our event is May 11, 2012 at AJ Jolly Golf Course in Northern Kentucky, so I have about 2 months to get ready. I'm not asking for donations, just some help on getting ready. However, if anyone has an extra box of Pro V1x balls they aren't using, I could definitely put them to good use during the event.

    Peace.

Bill, good luck sounds like a great cause. I used to do the same thing years ago when I was an assistant for a similar cause. Stay hydrated, eat little energy items every few holes. Avoid a big meal. We had people to help spot our golf balls which helped us keep moving. They also would get more drinks and food if we needed it. We never trained, but we were younger then too! Staying loose was always and issue after about 3 rounds, knowing some stretches to keep you loose my help. Good luck! Tom W. Naples, FL

At least 1 extra pair of shoes, if its wet more.

    Several pairs of socks.

Baby powder for your feet, chest, armpits.

    At least 1 extra shirt.

    Plenty of water.

Foot massager, BenGay, heating pads, ice packs, pain relievers..................and about a week to recover.

Bill, I have and still do participate in such an event in the Austin, TX area, have been doing it for 8 years now. The best way to prepare is not overdo it with too much golf before the event. The last thing you want to do is wear yourself out right before the event. Remember, the event is not for a trophy, it is for a good cause and can be fun if you allow it to be. The best thing I can suggest is to get rest the night before, stay loose the day of (not over swinging, worrying about pace and all the other mental things), and be sure eat as much as you can, snacking as your go thru the day, and drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. At my event, we are provided food, snacks, water, sodas, Gatorade, everything we need for free from start to finish. Have fun, and maybe you will get hooked and do this every year going forward. Just remember why and who you are doing this for! Bill F.

I don't know why there was no other text than a quote of my original posting, but I wanted to share the link to our golf marathon website, in case anyone who may be in the Cincinnati area would be interested in playing, of if anyone else is interested.

Our Golf Marathon is only 1 week away, and after playing 18 yesterday, and being tired by #17, I am worried. But I am going to push through and get it done. I am going to be posting regular updates on Twitter throughout the day. Please feel free to follow me @bhostetter, if you might be interested.

Sounds like fun. Don't try to swing to hard and if you don't feel like you are going to make it, you should stop.

Just being there and supporting the event is man enough.

If you ever get blisters or chafing, here are a couple of marathoner / mountain hiker tips: - Apply "vaseline" (white petroleum jelly) between your toes. Toes like to rub against each other. This allows them to do so without blisters or hot spots. I started doing this before every round over 20 years ago. Once in a while I forget and I really feel it. - If it's expected to be hot and/or humid, do the same in other areas that might chafe. My IronGirl sister in law uses a product called "ButtButter"... need I say more??? Good luck!

I played 105 holes in the golf marathon on Friday. It was a lot of fun, and I can't wait until next year to do it again. The weather was absolutely perfect (upper 40's in the morning to about 74 in the afternoon, clear blue skies), and the course (AJ Jolly) was in excellent condition. I was tired that night and the next day, but plan to play again tomorrow.

Thanks for your suggestions and support.

That is such a great idea. We do a similar thing every year.  Its a great cause too.

A golf marathon is really good fun.  Its funny my best round is always the last round.  That's a lot of warm up ;-)

    Change cloth inbetween each round.

Drink lots and lots and lots of water.

    Change shoes if you can.

Don't try to hit to especially hard. I would suggest you slow things down a bit in the swing to like 60%.  Keep the ball in play.  Lay up instead of doing long unlikely shots with FWs or 3 irons.

Also don't focus on the score, but more on making each round go by as easy as possible.

All the best - I am sure it will be great fun.
