How great is golf in the late summer and/or early fall?!?! Here in Southern Illinois we typically have a couple of false falls before the main one gets here but all of them are just fantastic while they last. For the past 12 years or so, I've not been able to partake in almost any golf beyond the middle of August due to my side profession as a volleyball official. I'm also a photographer so the days/nights I'm not refereeing are taken up by that or trying to keep my wife from killing me for being gone so much. With all of the sports cancellations due to COVID-19, I've been handed the opportunity to actually play golf (more than like two or three times total) in August, September, and hopefully some of October!

So, enough about my little pity-party of not being able to play often in the fall; what is YOUR favorite time of year to play golf.

Golf in the fall is wonderful in the South. The high temperatures, low humidity and the gnats are gone for a few weeks. Of course our fall normally starts around Thanksgiving. You just can never tell about our weather along the coast, but stick around is it bound to change. We can always count on long hot summers and very short winters. Four seasons down here was a singing group. You know; Big Girls Don't Cry, Walk Like a Man, Sherry. etc. etc. Cheers........

Most beautiful time of the year to walk your favorite course as the leaves turn & critters become more visible as they prepare for the cooler months. I enjoy the fall walking the course.

  4. The UK weather has been super for the last 10 days and most of us have been taking advantage.
The normal autumn weather over here is usually very variable - sometimes four seasons in the space of a couple of hours. It's nice to play with the crisp leaves under your feet... but the down side is your ball hiding in the leaf litter.

Much prefer to play early morning in summer with the sun on your back, greens firm, ball galloping into the distance on dry fairways and the sand dry in the bunkers. Then breakfast and clean the bats.

PS - If we are going for the ultimate, ideally the Canada geese will be making a mess elsewhere (in somebody else's field!) and the hungry, biting insects be having a lie-in.

With respect to other parts of the country, there's nothing like fall golf in New England. Although I've played golf in all the New England states, I'm partial to Vermont and western Massachusetts in the fall. The foliage is simply stunning.

We’ve had a nice cool front this past week or two, causing temps to be 15-20 degrees lower than normal. This weekend was absolutely beautiful for playing!

2 weeks ago, it was mid 90s and i was complaining how hot and brutally muggy it was, and i couldnt wait for fall. Now its a high of 65, and i couldnt be more angry at myself for ever complaining it was too hot smh
  10. I love fall golf. I grew up in PA, and, for some reason, our high school golf season was in the fall. Back in the stone age we played 18 hole matches for 4 points each. 3 points match play, front, back and overall and 1 point for stroke play. I can't think of a better reason to get out of class than to go play a round of golf.

Great "fall" weather yesterday in Durham, NC and the course we played (Umstead Pines) was packed. Waited on every shot but with 68 degrees, no humidity and a breeze it was a great day! Not many leaves to speak of and the only lost ball was in the water on the finishing Par 3...

Fall golf is pretty unique! I like to play in all the seasons but fall has its own benefits. Awesome views, typically the greens speed up with he cooler temps. Movie leaves on your putting line, only to have the wind blowout right back on the line LOL

I love fall golf, usually here on southeast Michigan is sunshine and cool, I don't mind the cold breeze at times, you can walk the whole 18 and feel like it was just a nice little stroll.
To me is the best time of the year.
I know some people love snow, but I hope we don't get any and the temps stay mild until mid December.

Hands down fall is the best! It’s finally cooling down here and my game is really coming together. I played a ton of golf during the summer and braved the 100+ degree days which makes cooler fall days feel better than ever. Just in time too for our club championship.

My neighbor and his wife just returned from Nantucket and said it was beautiful there. No golf, no fishing just hanging out, eating good good and relaxing. I love the fall/autumn because I can breath good clean air for a change.

I'm gonna whine a bit here. I say this in jest, but as I have said many times, much truth is spoken in jest.

I normally love fall golf. The conditions are usually excellent and the tee sheets are pretty empty during the week. Vacations are over, everyone is back to work and the kids are back in school. Well, not this year!

2020 has been a crazy year. It seems everyone who is supposed to be working from home as a result of the pandemic, is instead, out playing golf. And the kids are schooling virtually. Consequently, the tee sheets are full everyday till 4 o'clock and with the sun setting so much earlier and the courses packed, getting in 18 once the tee sheet opens up is difficult.

I have been lucky enough to have some freedom with my work schedule for most of my career and I guess I had gotten quite accustomed to playing at times when the courses weren't packed due to that flexibility. Don't hate me for that. As a semi-retired creative type, who has continued to do some freelance writing work from my home office over the last few years, I am able to make my own daily schedule. I have been working golf into it most days for those years. On days when I don't have a pre-scheduled group already on the tee sheet to play with, I would just head over to the course (which is around the corner from my house) and go out as a single once any morning rush quieted down. I could be spontaneous and just pop in as a walk-on most any midweek day. Now, it's not so easy. And frankly, I'm getting a little annoyed. I did not plan for this when I signed my last 5-year membership deal. It's making my daily play/practice routine fall apart. Under normal conditions, I would generally play four or five 18-hole rounds and a couple practice nines each week (typically later in the day on weekends). Now, I'm lucky to get in two full rounds and three practice nines. And most of the time, those nines are finishing around dark. I just want my course back! Is this ALL due to Covid stay-at-home restrictions or am I missing something? Wah Waah. Okay, I've whined.

Otherwise, autumn golf is the absolute best time of year.

Geez, I can only hope the colder temps of winter will thin out the crowds a little. At least maybe some of those TM and Cally fair-weather types might stay home. If there's no snow on the ground and the course is open, I'll be out there.

Same here at the Jersey Shore Doug E. Like a lot of other things, this pandemic has had a negative effect on fall golf here. The tee sheets are full all day. We're still doing 200 plus rounds a day. Folks aren't going home from vacation. They're staying right here, and many are buying and staying. Aerating and seeding are almost impossible. After the busiest summer ever, fall is every bit as busy. I'm hoping for a mild winter to have my course back.
    Play Well,

A friend of mine is a banker who's office has been working everyone is "every other day" shifts, so we've been hitting the road a bit and it's been an added bonus to this time off thing. Added a new course to the list and even hit up a Tour stop last week.

Seems everyone loves them some fall golf!!!

Played a couple fall rounds so far in Wisconsin. Love the cooler temps and the leaves changing colors. Playing a warmer than normal round on Saturday and can’t wait! I loaded up on cool weather gear and plan to play until the courses close.

Nothing is better than fall golf.
    - Courses are firm.
    - Cooler weather is perfect for walking.
    - Generally far fewer people out playing.
    - The Northern winds come, which make it fun.
