Vokey Gap vs. Set Gap??? What is your preference? What is the benefit of either option?

Probably a "personal preference" thing most of all. I went with T300 gap because I find I need the forgiveness most of all and I mainly use it for full shots. People who play blades or T100 might prefer the feel and control of Vokeys over their regular iron set. I see the Vokey as better for low spinners to tight pins, a shot that I really do not attempt to pull off.

I think it depends on what other wedges you have in the bag and how you will play partial approach shots. I would not have a GW to match my T200s if I were using that GW for my 50-90 yard approach shots. While I love my T200s, I want something with a shorter shaft and more feel for those shots. For me that is my 56 degree Vokey, which goes 100 yards with a full swing. And I use the 56 for the partial wedge shots as well. Because the T200s have very strong lofts, I went with the 48 degree GW T200. Then I got a 52 degree Vokey that further gaps between my 48 and 56. Only thing I don’t like about the T200s is the strong lofts which makes me carry an extra wedge for full shots between 100 and 125 yards (stock yardage for 48 degree T200 is 125 yards). The 56 is also my club around the greens.

I think the face is a little too hot for partial shots with the T200 GW. It’s great for full swings and three quarter swings for me but I don’t feel like I can refine distances for shorter shots.

I agree that this is likely a "personal preference" situation. For me I have the Vokey 50, 54, 58 wedge set up in my bag nearly 99% of the time. At this point, the set up is a known comfort for me so I don't order iron sets with a gap wedge when I do order replacements, I only order them 5-P. Personal preference for sure.

I had the set GW with my 718 AP1s which was ok, wasn't a huge fan, but I refer to the T200 GW in my bag as the "shank wedge". I can never quite seem to get a consistent ball flight. Most are way lower than I'd like and often pulls to the left. If it's not that, I struggle with the shanks with it and struggle with trusting it. Try to work with it on the range a lot, but doesn't seem to translate.

I'm going with a Vokey 48 next time around for sure. I currently play a 54 and 60 keeping the gap consistent between the three, based on how I hit it and what my fitter saw around the greens. I'm happy with the gapping, less so with the GW. Other than that club, I love my T200s.
  6. I’m currently on 44.5 pw, 49.5 uw, 56.14f and 60.10s. Considering a change to 44.5 pw, 48f vokey, 54.14f and 60.10s

    695MB P bent to 48. 56-12D bent to 54. 58-04T bent to 59. Wedgeworks 64W. For a 3 wedge setup, replace the 56-12D and 58-04T with 58-14K bent to 56.

It’s all about versatility. A set PW or GW is going to carry mostly the same shape, grind and bounce with rest of the irons. Specialty wedges in the Vokeys have a variety of grinds and bounce that effect performance.

I mostly use PW and GW for pretty full shots so I do not need as much versatility. I prefer the T150 set wedges there. I am very particular on the bounce and grinds for 56 and 60 because I manipulate the face much more often.

Grind and bounce become more important as we go down in speed and interact with the turf much more. So it comes down to wether or not the golfer prefers more or less options. If the golfer is looking to hit more partial shots with their PW or GW, specialized wedges can be an advantage.

Vokey PW and GW are all "F" grind so you are really only talking about the ability to vary loft and bounce with those clubs. They only offer two bounce options in each loft so the combinations are not super extensive like 54 degree and below. It is as you pointed out, because the purpose of PW and GW is full or partial shots from the fairways or light rough and you would utilize the unique bounce grinds much more from near the green or in and around bunkers. It is nice to have so many options and everyone has their own preference as to how they want to set up their 14 clubs in the bag. Sounds like you have the perfect set up for your game. Enjoy your T150's and Vokeys.

Dale, I've never been afraid of taking a wedge to a grinding wheel to adjust the sole/grind. I even used to get raw wedges from another manufacturer so as not to have issues with chrome plating wanting to peel after grinding. So, my winter's 'science project' was a 48* SM8 (F grind), which started with a different shaft instead of the S200/wedge flex. (Now lighter and softer, sort of a 'Tiger spinner shaft'). I have changed the lie angle (my irons are 1* flat, and I like the wedges to be at least 1* flat), and after working on short game, I modified the back of the sole and the heel so that it is a cross between an S grind and a little bit of an M grind at the heel. I'm much happier now!

I'll give you the best advise that I can offer. Get the data and let the numbers allow you to make an informed decision. A few years back, I was fit at Manchester Lane and had a similar question. After having the Trackman data, I was better going with the GW from the set rather than the Vokey. With subsequent fittings, including one in July for new irons, I had the same concerns and again the data pointed ME towards the T350 GW.

If the numbers were similar? That's where is comes down to personal preference. Myself? I might have opted for the Vokey over the sets GW. Maybe. Depending on the set, the GW will have similar characteristics to the rest of the set, including cavity back for more forgiveness. But again, the numbers would help with this.

I thought I had a gap with the new irons. Had a lesson yesterday and we ran Trackman for the wedges and saw that I was fine with my current wedges and no need to change. I'm an analytical person (and a CPA), so knowing that the numbers don't lie helps.

    Good Luck!

    My set up is

    Vokey 48*, 54* & 58*

I have had this set up for a couple of years and I am very comfortable with the gapping and the versatility.

For me i go SM9 Vokeys 46/50 with Modus 105 for full swings to be the same as my T100 105 shafts. Then SM9 54 58 with DG 115 shaft to give it that similar weight but tad heavier.

Not the biggest fan of the Vokey F grind (only grind until 54*) so kept the 48* T100S in the bag. Then jump to 54* S grind - bent to 53* for my gapping.
I enjoy the set 48* cause I only use it for full shots - feels like other full clubs.

I use the Vokey F grind in my 46, 50 and 54, then a M grind in my 60. This is the first time I elected for a Vokey PW. It doesn't have the carry distance but gives me great flighting and feel. I rarely hit full shots with any of these clubs, and I feel like the gaping and feel are perfect. It also helps with my spin rate, as I am typically a lower spin player and can use the boost.
