How to Elevate Bunker Shots

Added on March 13, 2025
Bunker shots can be challenging enough. But what do you do if you find your golf ball up against the face of a deep bunker? It's not simply a question of splashing the sand to propel the ball forward. You also have to hit the ball high enough to clear the lip of the bunker.

In this video, Titleist staff member Michael Breed faces just such a shot. His ball is lying very close to the front edge of a six-foot, sod-faced bunker. With a few adjustments to your setup and how you deliver the ball into the sand, you'll hit high-launching, soft-landing bunker shots just like Michael.

Keys to Elevating Bunker Shots:

• Take a wide stance and get low with your knees.
• Lower the handle as you address the ball.
• Assume a weak grip on your wedge and open the clubface during the backswing.
• Swing as hard as you can, with your path moving left (for a right-handed golfer) as the club exits the sand.
