You might be saying to yourself, “I thought wedge bounce was only for pros.” It’s true, the best golfers use wedge bounce to their advantage. What’s their secret? Practice.

Today, we’ll learn how to use wedge bounce with Titleist Staff Member Jack Druga, the PGA Professional at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club (host of the 2018 U.S. Open). For golfers who are learning, you may still have some questions about your wedges. Don’t worry. Titleist is here to help. Read on and find answers to some common questions we hear about wedges.

What is bounce on a wedge?

The bounce on a wedge is the area of the club that strikes the ground as you contact the ball. It’s this area on the club reacting with the turf that causes the wedge to “bounce” off the ground. Wedge bounce is measured as the angle between the leading edge and the trailing edge (i.e. the lowest point of the sole) of your wedge.

What bounce wedge do I need?

The amount (low/mid/high) of wedge bounce you’ll need will depend on the shot you’re taking, and your swing style. Low bounce wedges are helpful for high flop shots and tight lies near the green. Mid bounce wedges are more versatile, helping players create shots around the green with precise distance and trajectory. High bounce wedges create a lot of spin for short-game control, and their greater angle keeps the leading edge from dragging in the dirt if you tend to take deep divots.
