  1. I like to hit 5 iron when starting my range sessions, perhaps it is a habit learned over 50 years ago when I first had group lessons. If I am striking this well, that usually is a good sign my swing is in good shape. I have been more intentional before each shot, checking grip, alignment and posture before making a stroke and that seems to be resulting in many more center strikes.

From there, I will work on anything that might be giving me trouble, sand shots, driver, etc. During the season always take some time almost every day to hit chips and pitches in the backyard. Usually spend about 20 minutes on the putting green before each round, clock drill from 3', then move out to mid range and long putts.

Interesting question, it did make me think. I like to hit the longer irons, 4, 5 and 6. I feel like they are in the middle of the bag and gives you a good assessment of how you are hitting it. Thats just my own philosophy i guess. I do think all golfers could use more time on the practice green.

I practice my short game the most. Not only is it the most beneficial for me, but it's also the most fun. However, I really need to put more more time into my mid-irons. If I was able to hit more greens, I wouldn't have to rely on my pitching and chipping quite as much. My putting could be better, but I'm pretty comfortable on the greens.

I have always focused on 100 yards & in. This is where most of your strokes are taken and the more successful you are in this range, you will lower your scores and enjoy the game much better.

Living in Michigan where we are not able to play year-round, in the winter months I can go to an indoor range and practice iron shots to keep swing and tempo in shape, and then putt on a mat indoors at home.

Springtime, and summer seasons I spend time on the range hitting wedges to different distances, etc. to improve that aspect of my game. Also, early in the season here the greens are not always in the best shape/condition, so getting used to them being slower speed and bumpy makes that practice essential if you want to score better earlier in the year.
  6. I work with. my putter the most because I have a practice green in the backyard, so it's easy to have my coffee, grab my putter and a handful of balls and walk out there. Also, the practice area at the club has been closed for remodeling and it's about to open, so that'll give me the opportunity to work on some other things that I need to shore up (especially out of the sand, my bunker game has been crap lately).

For the most part my short game is pretty solid. I seem to have the greatest trouble hitting the greens with my mid irons. That’s where I lose most of my strokes. My driver is ok mostly and some days it’s great. As far as putting goes. It’s always about the same whether I practice or not. Golf is hard!

I live in Canada, so durning the winter I practice my approach shots a lot on my sim. in the summer It is mostly short game
  9. I don't practice except putting on a home mat maybe 30 minutes a week, total.
  10. I try to practice everyday, but that’s usually just 15minutes of putting in my garage or chipping at my local green. I honestly should hit more balls at the driving range though because I’m inconsistent with my irons and driver. Some days they are good, others they aren’t. But my chipping and putting seems to be very reliable and I think that’s because it’s the easiest for me to practice with my schedule.

Let's face it......you should practice ALL aspects of your game in order to give yourself the confidence necessary to execute every shot when you are on the course!

I answered mid iron shots to both. My miss with my 9 thru 7, I am sad to say, is a hosel rocket straight right. It's been an issue I've worked with my pro and constant practice (two rounds and four practice days) every week. When it's really bad it even bleeds down to my wedges. Light at the end of the tunnel time this season...three rounds in and the swing feels pretty good. So long story longer...still practice short to mid irons, but now the emphasis is direction and distance. 13.4 index

Before every round I start off on the chipping area. I use different wedges along with different type shots. Finish off with the sand trap shots. For the range I alternate irons, always using a high lofted club followed by mid iron followed by a long iron. Finish up with hybrid & 3 wood. Then putting before heading to the 1st tee

I make it a rule that whatever amount of time you spend at the range you spend the same amount or more time on the putting and chipping greens.

  16. “If you want to see radical improvement in your game and cut off five strokes in a week or two, you must make a radical change in the way you practice,” Penick said. “For two weeks devote 90 percent of your practice time to chipping and putting, and only 10 percent to the full swing. If you do this, your 95 will turn into 90. I guarantee it.”

When I do find the time to practice which isn’t often enough, I work mostly on my short game around the green. It seems to be one of the areas where you can easily lose that touch. I know I should probably spend more time on my mid iron game seeing that it’s what lets me down most of the time. But thankfully I do have a pretty handy short game to keep my scores from going up. I used to practice at the range and short game 3 to 5 times per week and it showed! But that was before dad duty which is more important now.

I typically don't have enough time after work to play 9, so I try to get to the range 2-3 evenings per week. In the past, I always planned to start with short wedges building to full wedges, and then hitting about 10-15 shots with 8 - 6 - Driver and then ending with more full wedge shots. Inevitably, something wouldn't go well and my plan went out the window and I would end up obsessed with getting it worked out before moving on to the next club. I just joined a new club and it has a great practice facility; range with a variety of target greens and a separate short game area with multiple greens. Now I find my practice is much more focused and I am really enjoying hitting toward "real" targets. I can still sometimes get derailed but I find that I am a lot more interested in hitting 8 through SW to the target greens that I am with 100 drivers until I feel good about it.

I always start my practice session with putting. The reason being is that I’m physically spent by the time I’m finished hitting balls in the range. So practicing my putting after hitting balls doesn’t work for me. Putting is the most important part of your game. If you two putted every green in regulation, you would have 36 strokes. That leaves 36 more strokes for the rest of the round to stay even par on 72 stroke courses. As an average golfer, I lose a lot of strokes on the green so that is what I focus on the most. I’ll put in at least 1-2 hours on the putting green before I walk up to the range. That doesn’t even count the hours I put in at home on my practice mat. But I never see the amount of practice time I put in as a burden. I love practicing probably more than I love getting in 9 or 18.
