The wait is over. SM8 is officially available in golf shops!

Talk about a hot start. SM8 has been the worst kept secret with record-setting adoption on the PGA TOUR, European Tour, and Korn Ferry. In its first 12 TOUR events, SM8 has already brought home 7 titles. 48% of the wedges at this week’s Bay Hill Invitational are Vokey Design and last week 57% of wedges in play at the Honda Classic were Vokey, including the winner: Sungjae Im.

So what exactly is this secret sauce that has SM8 making so much noise on tours? For starters, you can find a lot of great SM8 insights on the Vokey website. But what better way to learn about SM8 than asking the man himself?

Please submit your SM8 questions below and we'll have Bob Vokey dive in to answer your questions on Wednesday, March 11th.

SWEEPS: Simply submit your SM8 related question for Bob Vokey by replying to this thread below.

On Wednesday, March 11th, we will randomly select three (3) winner for a Vokey Store Prize Pack from all approved entries (submitted questions) made by Tuesday, March. 10, 2020 at 11:59 PM PT.

I am a digger type wedge player but when I try high bounce wedges I tend to to blade them. What are my options?

Do you see any advantages to cavity back wedges and will you ever make one?
  3. What technical data shows that the SM8 is better than previous models and are the numbers really significant?

Two numbers were important when we designed SM8 – I have my team, and I call them the braniacs…they do a great job. Our goal was the keep the CG height, behind the impact position, but push the CG forward. So, the measurements of CG were data point one. The second data point that came from how we moved the CG forward, was the increase in MOI (+7%). I’m a big believer that the club has to swing through the shot, there has to be dynamic face closure. And so, we did a lot of testing to make sure we maintained the swing, but still had the increased stability. For you, this means a more consistent hit more often.

Finally, the most important number to me was the overwhelming number of tour players that put the wedges in play this year on tour. We launched at RSM Classic, and it was the best tour seeding I’ve ever seen. And the adoption has continued to grow.

How can I find a 50* that feels like my 54* and 58*? The 50* always feels lighter than my other clubs.

Bob, I love my (ancient!) Vokey 50-degree raw steel wedge. Does the SM8 replicate the grab that the raw steel gives me?

    Mr. Vokey,
Can't wait for these! I wanted to ask if you recommend having the same shafts on the wedges and irons?
Also, I use my 52 for full shots so I wanted to ask if you usually see more or less bounce for full shots.

Bob, I currently play SM6 wedges 54, 58M. What improvements would I see in SM8 wedges? I love the work you are doing to help us all get better in the game we love.
    Thanks,
    Mike, R
  9. I need to upgrade my wedges, I currently have a 52-56-60 in my bag. Being a middle handicap will these continue to be my best choice?

As someone who plays about 80 rounds a year and is about a 10 handicap, how often do you recommend that I change out your wedges due to wear and tear on the faces?

For 56 and 60 degree what is the best bounce/grind for all types of conditions
  12. What's the best "standard" bounce for a wedge?
I find the need to use my wedges in every imaginable lie, so versatility is key.
  13. My big miss from the sand traps is my 56 Vokey wedge digs in the sand and ball comes out short. My blade is wide open at my stance. Do I need a different shaped Vokey wedge.
  14. Please explain the value of the fitting experience for wedges and do you think that you can be fitted properly for wedges on an artificial surface.
Most wedges in the stores are wedge flex do you think that your wedge shafts should match the flex in your iron set?

    Thanks
    Myron
  15. When considering bounce in buying the wedge, if the places you play are dry (Arizona) is less better. Also, what is your favorite wedge type (m,f,s,k)

Bob, after so many years of making the games best wedges, where do you find the inspiration to constantly drive continued innovation and improvement?

    Bob,
Help me with the thought to replace the PW from my irons set with an SM8 wedge to compliment my 3 current gamer SM wedges.

My long game isn’t getting longer and the short game will carry me from now on.

You have made many different grinds based on Tour player input. Does any input from Tour testing and Tour player loft preference go into your wedge loft general release layout?

How much does shaft selection matter in wedges? I match my shafts in my 46 and 50 to my irons (tour issue x100). My 54 and 60 I use tour issue S400. Should I be using the standard wedge flex shaft in any of those and if so what are the benefits.

My swing is steep and I have a PW and A 48degree ap3 play mostly in SoCal I have a 52 56 and 58 SM7 only use the 58 for 40 yards in and sand with large bounce. How will my set up change with the SM8s
  21. I currently play the SM6’s in 52, 56, & 60. I have found that the cg changes in each produces a little more boring (and slightly longer) trajectories, especially in the lob. I like this and want to know how do the new SM8,s compare? I tested the 7’s but did not find any difference than the 6’s. Thanks Mr. Vokey.
